Proper Christmas tree care – how to keep your Nordmann fir fresh for longer
With proper care, your fir tree will stay lush green and fragrant for weeks. Here you'll find the most important tips.
1. Fresh cut – the most important step
The tree can only absorb water with fresh pruning.

2. Drink plenty of water – check daily
A Nordmann fir tree drinks up to 2 liters of water per day at the beginning.
This is how it stays fresh:
- Fill with water immediately after setting up.
- Refill daily
- Never let it dry out (otherwise the trunk will become resinous)
3. The right location
Heat causes fir trees to shed their needles faster. Ideally:
- Distance to heating, fireplace & hot air
- Bright room, not directly by the window
- Ideally cool and draft-free
4. Acclimate the tree slowly
Large temperature fluctuations stress the tree.
- Briefly acclimatize in the stairwell/balcony
- Only then place it in the living room.
- Carefully remove the net after setting it up.
5. Decorate gently
- string of lights first
- Distribute jewelry evenly
- No elements that are too heavy
How long a Nordmann fir lasts
With good care, 3-5 weeks or longer.
Crucial factors: fresh cut, sufficient water, cool location.
